The Cost of Discipleship

first_imgYesterday the Liberian nation and people commenced three days of fasting and praying for deliverance from the deadly Ebola virus and from the pestilence of every evil that mars (ruins) our peace with God.The three days of fast and prayer were called for by the Liberian Council of Churches (LCC) and its partners, led by the Archbishop of the Interim Province of West Africa, Most Rev. Jonathan B.B. Hart, who is also the Episcopal Bishop of Liberia.  The Council of Churches prefaced their call by first declaring that God was angry with Liberia because of her disobedience.  The attack of the Ebola virus was a sign of God’s anger with Liberia. Why is God angry with Liberia?  We find it most unfortunate that the LCC did not come out with a clear-cut, explicit, even prophetic statement on the reason for God’s anger. Instead, LCC issued a watered down press release calling for a three-day fast and prayer.  We hope that our church leaders are not shying away from the prophetic calling to shout out fearlessly, “Thus says the Lord . . .” That is why Israel stoned the prophets, remember?  That is why Herod beheaded John the Baptist, who criticized Herod for taking his brother’s wife; St. Stephen was stoned to death, for fearlessly proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah.   Jesus Himself was murdered by the Jews, who neither accepted Him as the Messiah nor His message of unconditional forgiveness and salvation.  The world saw a vivid, even ruthless manifestation of this in Israel’s near total destruction of Gaza in the past month and its massacre of over 1000 people.Bishop Adolphus During, who chairs LCC’s National Fast and Prayer committee, told the Daily Observer yesterday that the whole basis of this week’s program is found in 2 Chronicles, 7:13-14.  It says, “If I shut up Heaven and there is no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; if my people . . . HUMBLE THEMSELVES, AND PRAY, AND SEEK MY FACE AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS; THEN WILL I HEAR FROM HEAVEN, AND WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN AND WILL HEAL THEIR LAND.”Bishop During was absolutely right!  THAT, and nothing else, is the problem with Liberia right now.  Archbishop Hart said as much in his Sunday, July 20 Independence sermon, when he pointedly named some of the nation’s sins: homosexuality, ritualistic killings, corruption in government. And now, to add insult to injury, we see the continuation of this corruption even in the ruling party, where primary results for the ensuing senatorial elections are being blatantly manipulated, in Bong, Gbarpolu, Nimba and other counties.  The ruling Unity Party either has not been reading or has forgotten the Daily Observer’s  constant editorial reminders that it was the ruling True Whig Party caucus’ interference in the democratic process that consolidated the absolute power TWP wielded for nearly 60 years (1925-80), until the people got fed up and, in whelming bloodshed, ousted TWP from power in 1980.See again what is happening within the ranks of the nation’s leading opposition party, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).  Money is being passed to get its leading senatorial contender out of the way to pave the way for whom?  Read the newspapers and listen out for the answer. Are these people determined, as was the TWP, to CORRUPT the political process in Liberia?  Do they know what they are doing–or asking for?Are we serious in asking for God’s help?  The Bible plainly says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked.  Whatsoever a man (or nation) soweth, that shall he surely reap.”Homosexuality, lesbianism, ritualistic killing, political corruption, corruption in government–which is so bad and so pervasive that even educational institutions can get NO money out of the Ministry ofFinance unless they surrender some of it to the paper pushing functionaries!  Is that how we will get the quality education we seek?Yes, God is angry with Liberia; but not with Liberia only, but with ANYONE who practices or condones these blatant transgressions.“. . . but if the people . . . HUMBLE THEMSELVES, AND PRAY, AND SEEK MY FACE AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS; THEN WILL I HEAR FROM HEAVEN, AND WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN AND WILL HEAL THEIR LAND.”This is the cost of discipleship.  This is the path to the deliverance of the nation.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
