Fort St. John Fire Prevention Officer, Simon Caughill says this year’s theme is ‘Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives,’ which he says speak true to its importance.“Seventy per cent of fatal fires are the result of not having a working smoke alarm,” Caughill said.The take way from this year’s theme is ensuring residents have a working smoke alarm, that it’s tested regularly each month, the batteries are changed once a year and of course, the overall prevention of fires.- Advertisement -Some things to look forward to during Fire Prevention Day at Home Hardware include fire trucks, some of which will have the slide deployed, the fire safety house, bouncy castles and goodies for the children, a barbeque and even the opportunity to use some of their equipment.“There will be fire extinguisher demonstrations where the public can actually discharge a fire extinguisher with a live fire,” Caughill went on to say. “Hose lines (will be) deployed for the kids and they can practice with an actual fire hose and hitting the target.”This year’s Fire Prevention Week is however more low-key than usual, as Caughill says they won’t be heading into middle school classrooms, explaining that the fire department “didn’t want to take away anymore time from the kids” amid the return of school after the months long strike.Advertisement “We’re going to be doing the ‘Fire Chief for the Day’ this year,” Caughill said. “We’ll be in touch with the schools early next week.”Fire Prevention Week is on a national scale, created by the National Fire Prevention Association and celebrated across North America.“It originated back from the Great Chicago Fire where hundreds of thousands of people were displaced… just to bring safety awareness to the general public.”Fire Prevention Week runs this year from October 5 – 11.Advertisementlast_img
