European Leagues round up: Barca, PSG, Bayern all fail to win

(PHOTOS/Courtesy)With only the Italian Serie A yet to kick-off, there was action in the Spanish La Liga, Bundesliga and French Ligue One.In Spain, Barcelona got their title defence off to a disappointing start as they lost 1-0 away to Athletic Bilbao on Friday night.Missing their captain and star player-Lionel Messi, the Bulgranas struggled throughout the game and finally succumbed Aritz Aduriz winner with just a minute of the 90 to play. The other bad news for Barcelona is that striker Luis Suarez who had earlier hit the frame of the goal with a side-footed strike got injured in the game.The result leaves them sitting in 15th on the log while Bilbao are 5th.Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid were on the other hand victorious in their opening game.Despite finishing the contest with 10 men after Luka Modric was sent off early in the second half, Zinedin Zidane’s side held on to defeat Celta Vigo 3-1 away from home.Karim Benzema opened the scoring inside 12 minutes. Toni Kroos made it 2-0 on 61 minutes before substitute Lucas Vazquez added another inside the last 10 minutes. Iker Losada pulled one back on 90 minutes but it was not enough to deny Real an opening weekend victory.Real who are now top of the table via goals scored; lead Barcelona in the La Liga standings for the first time in over two years while Celta are second from bottom.The other giants of Spanish football-Atletico Madrid also started the 2019/20 campaign with a victory.In a game that saw either side have a player sent-off, Diego Simone’s much-changed side defeated Getafe 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Sunday night.Alvaro Morata scored the winning goal on 23 minutes before Jorge Molina was shown red for the visitors and Renan Lodi succumbing to the same face three minutes to the break.Elsewhere, Real Valladolid, Sevilla, Deportivo Alaves, Osasuna and Mallorca were also victorious in their opening fixtures.Valladolid beat Betis 2-1 away from home, Sevilla were 2-0 winners at Espanyol, Alaves scrapped to a 1-0 win at home to Levante, Osasuna downed Leganes 1-0 will Mallorca marked their return to the top flight with a 2-1 home victory against Eibar.The other two games all ended in stalemates with Valencia being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Real Sociedad while Villarreal and Granada played out to a thrilling 4-4 draw at the Estadio de la Ceramica.In the Germany Bundesliga, Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Hertha Berlin in the opening fixture.Bayern drew 2-2 on opening day.Robert Lewandowski scored the opening goal on 24 minutes but Hertha struck twice in as many minutes to turn the game on its head. First, Dodi Lukebakio levelled matters on 36 minutes before Marco Grujic made it 2-1 to the visitors.At the hour mark, Lewandowski scored his and Bayern’s second on the night to ensure it ended all square at the Allianz Arena.Bayern’s major threat to retaining an eight consecutive crown-in Dortmund, walloped Augsburg 5-1 at home on Saturday afternoon.Florian Niederlechner handed Augsburg an early lead inside the opening minute but Paco Alcacer equalized moments later for the home side.Alcacer would later add another with Jordan Sancho, Marco Rues and debutant Julian Brandt also getting in on the act as Dortmund ran out comfortable winners.Dortmund now climbs top of the League on goals scored and how they would love to stay there until the end of Match-Day 34.Currently in second, seats RB Leipzig who put four past hapless Union Berlin on Sunday evening.It was a four-star performance for Julien Nagelsmann’s side with Marcel Halstenberg, Marcelo Sabitzer, Timo Warner and substitute Christophe Nkunku all on target.Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt, Freiburg, Dusseldorf, Wolfsburg and Leverkusen also registered victories on Match-Day one.Frankfurt beat Hoffenheim 1-0, Freiburg were 3-0 winners at home to Mainz, Dusseldorf defeated Bremen 3-1 away from home, Wolfsburg scrapped to a 2-1 victory at home to Koln while Leverkusen managed a 3-2 victory against stubborn Paderborn.In the other fixture, Borussia Monchengladbach drew 0-0 at home to Schalke 04.In France, PSG where subjected to a first loss of the season as they lost 2-1 away to Rennes.Still without star player-Neymar Jr, the Parisians took a 36th-minute lead through Edison Cavani but they could not see it out into the break as Mbaye Niang equalized for the home side on 44 minutes.Cavani (9) celebrates opening the scoring on Sunday.Three minutes into the second half, Del Castillo turned the game on its head with a second goal for Rennes, a lead that they held onto until the end.The result means that PSG who have won both of the last two Ligue One titles now sit 8th on the log with three points from two games.Three teams currently hold a 100% record in the standings. Lyon who drabbed Angers 6-0 on Friday, Nice who beat Nimes 2-1 away from home on Saturday and Rennes are the sides that are yet to drop a point this season.For Monaco, their troubles continued this past weekend thanks to a 3-0 loss away to Metz.
