The Alberta Energy Regulator lifts partial suspension on Nexens Long Lake site by kendrafowler Posted Sep 6, 2015 10:26 pm MDT The Alberta Energy Regulator has approved a partial resumption of some utility pipelines at Nexen Energy’s Long Lake oil sands site.An inspection revealed a portion of the site could operate safely with low risk to the publics safety and environmental protection. Nexen Energy is able to maintain about 75-percent of their oil sands production and upgrader operations. Fifty five pipelines remain shut off and will not operate until the company shows the AER it can stay within the regulatory requirements and operate all pipelines safely. The suspension to cease operation of ninety five pipelines was given out on August 28th due to non-compliance surrounding pipeline maintenance and monitoring at its Long Lake oil sands project.On July 15th a pipeline at the site began leaking, spilling about five million litres of a mixture of bitumen, water and sand.
