Inside Logics 18002738255 Suicide Prevention Song Mental Health Awareness Month

first_imgOne of the singles off his 2017 album Everybody, “1-800-273-8255,” leapt onto the music scene and brought the Maryland native to a whole new audience. Not just any phone number, 1-800-273-8255 happens to be the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which offers services to those experiencing a mental health crisis, including suicidality. The song, which also features Alessia Cara and Khalid, poignantly captures a dialog between a suicidal hotline caller, the counselor on the other end of the phone and the resulting journey from feeling hopeless and alone to finding a little hope.Though suicide is the leading cause of death among 15–24 year olds, and it claims more than 38,000 lives each year, few artists tackle the subject head on in the way Logic did. He revealed during a visit to the Recording Academy’s Santa Monica, Calif., headquarters that he was inspired to write the song after he went on a tour around the country to meet his fans. Many told them his music had saved their lives. This got him thinking about not only the power of music to heal, but also how, as a society, we often don’t talk openly about mental health. Though he said it was hard to talk about topics such as suicide and anxiety, which is featured on another track on Everybody, “Anziety,” he knew it was vitally important.”I was so scared for so long to say that because society has lead me to believe that my anxiety is stupid and shouldn’t be talked about, or that suicide, ‘Who cares, who’s weak enough to kill themselves?’ Which is the most terrible, disgusting, ugly thing somebody can say,” Logic said. “That’s why I decided to write about these topics because I was scared to write about them. And since I was scared, I was like, ‘Well damn, it must mean it’s good.'”And it was good. “1-800-273-8255″ earned Logic his first two career GRAMMY nominations at the 60th GRAMMY Awards for Song Of The Year and Best Music Video. Logic, Cara and Khalid also gave a stunning performance during the 60th GRAMMYs telecast alongside real suicide attempt survivors, which had an even more profound impact: The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline received triple their normal volume of calls following the performance. For Logic, opening a dialog was also personally important because he has faced his own challenges with mental health.”I wrote these things from a selfless place in my heart because there’s so many people out there struggling, and I was struggling,” Logic shared. “My highest grossing year was my most unhappy year of my life because I was working myself to death.”Nowadays, Logic has been working to find a way to balance a high-pressure career with the things that matter in life. The advice that works best for him?”Balance yourself,” he says. “That’s what you have to do, and that’s what these songs are about.”Catching Up On Music News Powered By The Recording Academy Just Got Easier. Leaders of 2 Koreas hold surprise meeting

first_imgSouth Korean president Moon Jae-in shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their summit at the truce village of Panmunjom, North Korea, in this handout picture provided by the Presidential Blue House on 26 May, 2018. Photo: ReutersSouth Korean president Moon Jae-in held a surprise meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday to ensure the upcoming high-stakes summit between Kim and US president Donald Trump is a success, South Korean officials said. The unannounced meeting is the latest dramatic turn in a week of diplomatic flip-flops surrounding an unprecedented summit between the United States and North Korea, and the strongest sign yet that the two Korean leaders are trying to keep the on-again off-again summit on track.Their two-hour talks at the Panmunjom border village came a month after they held the first inter-Korean summit in more than a decade at the same venue on 27 April and declared they would work toward a nuclear-free Korean peninsula and formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War.”The two leaders candidly exchanged views about making the North Korea-US summit a successful one and about implementing the Panmunjom Declaration,” South Korea’s presidential spokesman said in a statement. He did not confirm how the secret meeting was arranged or which side asked for it.Moon, who returned to Seoul on Thursday morning after meeting Trump in Washington earlier this week in a bid to keep the summit on track as initially planned, for 12 June in Singapore, was due to announce details of the meeting with Kim early on Sunday. One of the photos released by the presidential Blue House on Saturday showed Moon and Kim hugging each other after their meeting at Tongilgak, the North’s building in the truce village. The previous summit was held at the southern side of the border. They were accompanied by South Korean intelligence chief Suh Hoon and his North Korean counterpart Kim Yong Chol, who is in charge of inter-Korean affairs. Another photo showed Moon shaking hands with Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong.TRUMP HAILS “PRODUCTIVE TALKS”Trump said on Friday that Washington was having “productive talks” with Pyongyang about reinstating the 12 June meeting, just a day after cancelling it.Politico magazine reported that an advance team of 30 White House and State Department officials was preparing to leave for Singapore later this weekend.Reuters reported earlier this week the team was scheduled to discuss the agenda and logistics for the summit with North Korean officials. The delegation was to include White House deputy chief of staff Joseph Hagin and deputy national security adviser Mira Ricardel, US officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.Trump said in a Twitter post late on Friday: “We are having very productive talks about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, 12 June, and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date.”South Korean president Moon Jae-in bids fairwell to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as he leaves after their summit at the truce village of Panmunjom, North Korea, in this handout picture provided by the Presidential Blue House on 26 May, 2018. Photo: ReutersTrump had earlier indicated the summit could be salvaged after welcoming a conciliatory statement from North Korea saying it remained open to talks.”It was a very nice statement they put out,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We’ll see what happens – it could even be the 12th.””We’re talking to them now. They very much want to do it. We’d like to do it,” he said. The comments came just a day after Trump cited Pyongyang’s “open hostility” in cancelling the meeting.THREATS, INSULTSAfter years of tension over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme, Kim and Trump agreed this month to hold what would be the first meeting between a serving US president and a North Korean leader. The plan followed months of war threats and insults between the leaders over North Korea’s development of missiles capable of reaching the United States.Trump scrapped the meeting in a letter to Kim on Thursday after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out over what it saw as confrontational remarks by US officials demanding unilateral disarmament. Trump cited North Korean hostility in cancelling the summit. In Pyongyang, North Korean vice foreign minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea’s criticisms had been a reaction to American rhetoric and that current antagonism showed “the urgent necessity” for the summit. He said North Korea regretted Trump’s decision to cancel and remained open to resolving issues “regardless of ways, at any time.”Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea had appreciated Trump having made the bold decision to work toward a summit.”We even inwardly hoped that what is called ‘Trump formula’ would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue,” he said.North Korea also went ahead with a plan to destroy its only known nuclear site on Thursday, the most concrete action yet since pledging to cease all nuclear and long-range missile tests last month.Dozens of international journalists left North Korea on Saturday after observing the demolition of the underground tunnels in Punggye-ri, where all of the North’s six nuclear tests were conducted including its latest and largest in September.Trump’s latest about-face sent officials scrambling in Washington. Defense secretary Jim Mattis told reporters diplomats were “still at work” and said Trump had just sent a note out on the summit, which could be back on “if our diplomats can pull it off.”US State Department spokeswoman Katina Adams declined to give details of any diplomatic contacts but said: “As the president said in his letter to Chairman Kim, dialogue between the two is the only dialogue that matters. If North Korea is serious, then we look forward to hearing from them at the highest levels.”White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters Trump did not want a meeting that was “just a political stunt.””He wants to get something that’s a long-lasting and an actual real solution. And if they are ready to do that then … we’re certainly ready to have those conversations,” she said.last_img read more

Chinese Automaker Plans SelfDriving Electric Car by 2020

first_imgJuly 12, 2016 2 min read This story originally appeared on Reuters An automotive venture backed by China tech giant Tencent aims to launch an electric self-driving car before 2020, entering a crowded field dominated by US-based Tesla, the chief executive told Reuters on Tuesday.Future Mobility, backed by Tencent and Hon Hai Precision Industries, is one of an expanding field of China-backed ventures that aim to take on Tesla Motors Inc. as green energy car sales boom in China.Although the venture sought to produce premium cars like Tesla, it would attempt a different strategy from the US company that began with relatively limited production and focuses on a single model at a time, CEO Carsten Breitfeld said in an interview.”Right from the beginning we define the platform, right from the beginning we define the production process to be mass production and right from the beginning we think of more than one model, a family of models, defined from this platform,” Breitfeld said, defining mass production as 250,000 to 400,000 cars annually. The company was in the midst of closing its Series A round of funding, which also included dealership chain China Harmony New Energy Auto, Breitfeld said.He declined to give financial terms of the first round or name other potential investors that the company was in talks with, although he said the leadership team would also have partial ownership. While Future Mobility intended to jump directly to fully self-driving cars, drivers would only be able to turn on full autonomy in a pilot city at first, later expanding to other geographies. The company would draw from the same battery technology made by a short list of suppliers that most automakers use but aimed to better rivals with more efficient battery management software.Breaking outFuture Mobility is not the first upstart automaker to make bold pronouncements. Chinese-invested Atieva aims to launch an electric car by 2018.LeEco says its proposed smart electric cars will eventually be free, making money on in-car content and other services.Even Tesla now aims to produce 500,000 cars annually by 2018.But Future Mobility stands out from its competitors for poaching its leadership away from big-name tech and autos companies.Breitfeld formerly led the BMW i series electric car division and brought the core team with him to the new venture, with others joining from Tesla, Alphabet’s Google and Daimler’s Mercedes.(Reporting by Jake Spring; Editing by Stephen Coates) Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Register Now » Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.last_img read more
