Actress Ellen Page, who is married to Canadian dancer Emma Portner says it’s time to “step up” to support transgender people.”We need to realise that a lot of the marginalised people in our community have been left behind. We need to step up for trans people because they are under attack,” Ellen told Gay Times magazine. The Juno star decided to speak out after lesbian tennis player Martina Navratilova was fired from a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) charity last week for making trans phobic comments against transgender female athletes, reports femalefirst.co.uk.”A man can decide to be female, take hormones if required by whatever sporting organisation is concerned, win everything in sight and perhaps earn a small fortune, and then reverse his decision and go back to making babies,” Navratilova said.Responding to those comments, Page slammed the sporting star for letting history repeat itself, as she branded Navratilova’s words as “demonising and dehumanising”.”It’s not like people didn’t use the same arguments for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, but people are also using that rhetoric to make trans people seem like predators,” X men actress said.”It’s demonising and dehumanising. It’s deplorable. In regards to those conversations in the UK, and the treatment and attack on trans rights in the US, it’s utterly cruel,” she added.Watch Juno trailer:ALSO READ| Feminist porn is crucial, says Ellen PageALSO READ| X Men actress Ellen Page secretly married girlfriend Emma Portner. Story Highlights Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the policies and programmes carried out or contemplated by the Government are in the best interest of the citizens.Mr. Holness cites the proposed implementation of the National Identification System (NIDS) as one such project. He was speaking at a press conference at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, on Tuesday (February 27), following the conclusion of the 7th Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Caribbean Governors’ Meeting.Noting the issue of trust resonating with some persons about how personal data collated under NIDS will be handled, Mr. Holness gave the assurance that there will be “nothing nefarious to, in any way, erode the privacy of the citizen”.“Many issues arise when we start to enter upon the conversation about giving every citizen an identification. It means that the Government will have to collect information about every citizen, (and) we acknowledge that many of these concerns are legitimate,” he said. The Prime Minister said, however, that the Government is duty-bound to act responsibly, scrupulously and with integrity to ensure that the citizen’s well-being is safeguarded in whatever endeavour is carried out.“So whether it is in national security, justice and supporting the judiciary… (providing) housing and facilitating land settlement, increasing the efficiency of the public, the speed at which we do business, (or) giving the citizen an identity, the Government is acting in the best interest of the citizen. What we are trying to do is strengthen Government so that we can better serve you,” Mr. Holness said. The IDB conference, which was held under the theme ‘Jump Caribbean’, focused on how best the region can strategically embrace the reality of the digital revolution.Importantly, the IDB wants Caribbean partner states to tap technology and apply innovative methods as a means to solve problems, improve productivity, generate employment and advance development.IDB President, Luis Alberto Moreno, headed the visiting team of Bank officials attending the conference, which also saw the affiliate Governors of several territories participating. They included representatives from The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica. Also attending were global business leader, Sir Richard Branson; and former President of the Republic of Estonia, Toomas Hendrik Ilves. With the prospect of a bipartisan deal to extend legal protection to “Dreamers” fading quickly, House leaders are counting on strong backing from the Republican Conference to pass a continuing resolution (CR) needed to avert a government shutdown at midnight Friday. On Tuesday, House Republicans introduced a stopgap measure running through Feb. 16 with a number of add-ons designed to attract support from members of both parties. At press time, though, it was not clear whether leaders could advance the bill relying only on Republican votes, reported the Washington Post. The CR would extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program for six years and delay by two years the implementation of two unpopular taxes included in the Affordable Care Act, one on medical devices and one on high-cost “Cadillac” employer-sponsored health insurance plans. The House plans to take up the measure, which would be the fourth CR Congress has passed to keep the government funded in fiscal 2018, on Thursday. Sonakshi SinhaPR HandoutSome videos featuring Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha being arrested are creating ripples on social media, but sources from the B-Town say that it is a publicity gimmick for her upcoming event.Varinder Chawla, one of the noted photographers of Bollywood, shared a couple of videos on Instagram and wrote, “SHOCKING: #MissionMangal star Sonakshi Sinha gets into legal trouble during promotions #aslisonaarrested #sonakshisinha #AsliSonaArrested #WhereIsSonakshiSinha #Sonakshi #SonakshiSinha #Aslisona.”Viral Bhayani, who is another popular fashion photographer from Mumbai, also shared the same videos on Instagram and wrote, “Looks like #SonakshiSinha is in some trouble. #aslisonaarrested #AsliSonaArrested #WhereIsSonakshiSinha #Sonakshi #SonakshiSinha #Aslisona.”In the first videos, Sonakshi Sinha is seen declining to talk to reporters as she enters an office. In the second clip, she is seen yelling at the person, who is handcuffing her, “You can’t arrest me like this. Do you who I am? I have not done anything, I am innocent. How can you arrest me like that?”These videos fueled the speculations that Sonakshi Sinha was arrested in connection with a cheating case filed by an event organiser in Uttar Pradesh. When approached her PR team, they said that they are clueless about it, but they did not stop reporting this development. In reply to IBTimes, India, they said, “We are looking into it.”Neither the photographers, who shot the video, nor her PR team wants to speak about Sonakshi Sinha’s arrest, but they want it to be publicized in the media. This clearly shows that it is a publicity gimmick. A source, who is aware of this video, told IBTimes India, “It is paid promotional video, which is meant to be a publicity gimmick for her upcoming event.”However, some of the people, who responded to the above posts, also feel that it is a publicity gimmick. A few said that she should be arrested in real for the kind of performance she has given in her recent movies. Here are some of their reaction.Sohil_monvelvala: Shayad koi movie ki shooting ya phir add shooting ka sence hai?Shoesbuykart: Fake ho ya real ,how can she say do you know who I am ,c**t*y* hai tu samji Sanjay Dutt Ko jail ho Sakti hai toh tu konsi Oscar winning actress’s chupchap jail me baithSrimalayasouravvarun: Itna ghatiya picture banane ki sajaa to yaahi hona chahiyeKetanlondhe: Deserved to be in prison to spare us from her crap filmsVis6807: Isko arrest krke Kashmir bhej do waha ke aatankwadi isse dekh kar bhag jayenge…Awesome_abhi__: Badshah hero he bhai inki movie me inko to kaale pani ki saja milni chahiyePpatchysense: Hona chiye arrest bhaiya acting ki to ek kar Rakhi hai or Abhi khanadani chutyapa main vo lead hai haad hai Bollywood chutya
United Airlines planes on the tarmac at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco, California. AFP file photoUnited Airlines found itself in the middle of a social media storm on Monday, after the US carrier forcefully removed a passenger from a flight due to overbooking. The incident occurred Sunday on a United Express flight bound for Louisville, Kentucky, from Chicago. United Express flights are operated by one of eight regional airlines which partner with United. The airline said it had asked for volunteers to give up their seats on the flight, and police were called after one passenger refused to leave the plane.Smartphone video posted online showed three Chicago Department of Aviation police officers struggling with a seated middle-aged man.The man started to scream as he is dragged off while other passengers looked on—some recording the event with their phones. One passenger can be heard yelling, “Oh my God, look at what you did to him!”The incident ignited social media outrage, with “United” a trending term on Twitter, Facebook and Google. It was another example of bad press and negative social media coverage for United, after an incident in late March when two teenage girls were denied boarding a flight in Denver because they wore leggings. The airline defended its action, saying the girls were flying on passes that require them to abide by a dress code in return for free or discounted travel. In Sunday’s incident, United told US media that it had asked for volunteers to leave the overbooked plane.“One customer refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily and law enforcement was asked to come to the gate,” United spokesman Charlie Hobart was quoted by the Chicago Tribune newspaper as saying. The airline did not return AFP’s request for comment.United Airlines chief executive Oscar Munoz addressed the latest controversy in a statement posted Monday on the airline’s website.“This is an upsetting event to all of us,” Munoz said, adding that the airline was conducting a “detailed review of what happened.”“We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation,” he said.Tyler Bridges, who posted video of Sunday’s incident on Twitter, wrote: “not a good way to treat a Doctor trying to get to work because they overbooked.”He described passenger reaction on the plane as “disturbed.”“Kids were crying,” he said.Bridges also wrote that the man appeared bloodied by his encounter with law enforcement and posted video showing him later running back on the plane, repeatedly saying, “I have to go home.”The man appeared to be pacing and disoriented.US airlines are allowed to involuntarily bump passengers off overbooked flights, with compensation, if enough volunteers cannot be found, according to the US Department of Transportation.
Marjorie Kamys CoteraGov. Rick Perry addresses media at a press conference following the unveiling of his official portrait at the Texas Capitol on May 6, 2016President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly selected erstwhile rival and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to serve as his energy secretary. If confirmed, Perry will oversee American energy policy and its ramifications on the economy, environment and national security.Houston Public Media’s Coverage of Election 2016CBS News and other outlets reported the news late Monday night, hours after Perry met with the president-elect in New York. It was the second time Perry had made the trip to Trump Tower. Yet Perry has previously supported abolishing the Department of Energy entirely. Famously, during a presidential debate in November 2011, Energy was the third federal agency that Perry couldn’t name while trying to list the three he wanted to eliminate.“It’s three agencies of government when I get there that are gone — Commerce, Education and the, um, what’s the third one there? Let’s see,” Perry said, before finally giving up with his now-infamous “oops.”The appointment marks a full repair in Perry’s relationship with Trump. Perry called Trump “a cancer on conservatism” last year while the two men were in a crowded field for the Republican presidential nomination. But Perry was one of the first members of the Republican establishment to back Trump, once it became clear in May that the real estate mogul had secured the party’s nomination.Perry’s background as governor of Texas, a state rife with natural resources, is a key qualifying credential for the post. But this Cabinet role can go well beyond oil and natural gas. The outgoing secretary of energy, Ernest Moniz, had a physics background and played a central role in President Obama’s Iranian nuclear deal.If confirmed, Perry will be the third Texan to serve as secretary of energy. Previously, Houstonian Charles Duncan served in this role under President Jimmy Carter, as did Laredo native Frederico Peña in the Clinton administration.Perry will face Senate confirmation once Trump takes office. Republicans control the Senate, making that process all the easier for the president-elect’s nominees. PixabayU.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to open another detention center in South Texas for people apprehended entering the country illegally. The Austin American-Statesman reports the agency this month asked private companies to submit preliminary proposals for a new facility along the Interstate 35 corridor housing adult detainees. There are already a number of such detention centers operating south of San Antonio. The request for proposals indicates ICE is open to new construction or the renovation of an existing facility. It would house about 1,000 beds.ICE says it can’t comment on pending contracts.Arrests of immigrants crossing the border into Texas have declined sharply since the election of President Donald Trump, but arrests from domestic enforcement efforts in Texas and other states are on the rise.___Information from: Austin American-Statesman, http://www.statesman.com Share

Photo credit: James Berry Listen X Share 00:00 /00:57 The push for women to have equal opportunities in historically male-dominated jobs has affected a spectrum of industries: the symphony is one of them.Male and female musicians in orchestras have almost equal representation, according to a 2016 survey by the League of American Orchestras. But, only about 20 percent of conductors in America are women.John Mangum, Houston Symphony Executive Director and CEO, says that needs to change. “In our Miller Outdoor Theatre concerts this summer, we had two male and two female conductors. I was really proud of that,” said Mangum.Conductors Jessica Cottis and Elim Chan made their Houston debut performances in June. Kaupo KikkasConductor Jessica Cottis Willeke MachielsConductor Elim Chan“If people don’t challenge things, the status quo just sort of stays in place,” said Mangum.“And I think the status quo has been conductors are supposed to be men, and, ya know, I think we’re learning that there are some wonderful female conductors who are kind of under the radar because they just didn’t have the opportunity five, ten years ago. And so, giving them the opportunity now, I think, is critical.”Jesse Rosen, President and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, said orchestras are playing catch-up to what he says has been a gender-role issue.“Historically, it’s been a male-dominated role,” said Rosen. “The concept of the conductor, ya know, was kind of the classic authoritarian figure, who told everyone what to do… And that was presumed to be a role only suitable for men. And that is changing. It’s changing slowly, but it is, in fact, changing.”The Houston Symphony says Jane Glover is conducting all of its performances of Messiah this holiday season. Some female conductors are slated for the to-be-announced 2019-2020 season, according to Mangum.Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect conductor Jane Glover is incorporated in the Houston Symphony’s 2018-2019 season, as well.
