The Lakers did just that at the start of the second quarter by turning a four-point game into a 20-point rout. Shammond Williams and Aaron McKie again were the first guards off the bench, but Evans came through with the play of the game. Evans leaped to steal a pass by Sarunas Jasikevicius, then hit a shot that lived up to his Kobe Bryant-given nickname of “Lotto.” With Jasikevicius wrapping him up with both hands, Evans tossed in a lay-up while drawing the foul. “I think that’s what having good strength will allow you to do,” Evans said, “is still make a run at tough shots.” The next possession, Evans sank a 3-pointer to send the Warriors into a timeout down 44-28. Golden State made just 1 of 10 shots to start the second quarter; Stephen Jackson and Mickael Pietrus each missed two free throws. “I definitely saw that they were on the brink of letting us take control of the game,” Evans said. “We were all talking about it on the sidelines. They were ready to wilt, and if we could just continue to put pressure on them, we could gain control of this game.” The Lakers are 4-0 with Evans in the starting lineup. He made 8 of 13 shots and later said the biggest difference between starting and coming off the bench is as simple as shaking off a couple early misses. “It’s hit or miss when you come off the bench sometimes,” Evans said. The last thing assistant Brian Shaw wrote on the locker room board as part of his scouting report was “Road mentality” with an asterisk beside it. The Lakers came into Sunday with just an 11-16 road record, having lost their previous three road games. If they are to advance in the playoffs, the Lakers likely will do so without home-court advantage, which will force them to win at least one game away from Staples Center. They will learn more about their ability to do that tonight in Salt Lake City. “You have to gut it out, you have to grind it out,” Jackson said of playing Utah. “You have to be able to play a physical game without losing your cool.” firstname.lastname@example.org (818) 713-3607 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! They did it with Maurice Evans making his case to stay in the starting lineup by scoring a career-high 26 points and with the Warriors making just 2 of 19 3-pointers and 9 of 21 free throws. Golden State came in averaging 105.8 points a game. “I told the players this afternoon that we have Mo on our side,” Jackson said, “and we have to stay with it, in more ways than one.” Are the Lakers back after their six-game losing streak? The answer might come tonight against the Utah Jazz, who are leading the Northwest Division with a 37-18 record and are 2-0 since Carlos Boozer’s return from injury. “You can’t forget about (the skid) because it’s so easy to happen,” Evans said. “You have to really stay focused and try and build this streak the other way because. Teams are good in this league and they can take control in a minute’s notice.” His team was on the downward plunge that Sunday and ultimately bottomed out with a six-game losing streak. The concern now is if the Lakers are back on the upswing after their second cruise-control victory in 72 hours. They beat the Golden State Warriors 102-85 on Sunday at Oracle Arena after building a 20-point lead in the second quarter and beating their division rivals for the seventh time in seven games since Jackson’s return last season. • Photo Gallery: 02/25: Lakers vs. Warriors OAKLAND – It was only two weeks ago in Cleveland that Lakers coach Phil Jackson offered a reminder that life in the NBA is nothing more than a six-month roller-coaster ride between winning and losing.
Jody Wilson-Raybould was the first Indigenous person to be justice minister. (APTN file)The Canadian PressJody Wilson-Raybould is telling her Vancouver constituents she intends to run for re-election this fall as a Liberal. The former justice minister and attorney general quit Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet last month and has testified that he and his staff inappropriately pressured her to help engineering firm SNC-Lavalin avoid a criminal trial on corruption charges. In an open letter posted to her website today, she says important questions haven’t been answered about the affair and Canadian politics still has a “culture of conflict, empty partisanship and cynical games.”The letter also says she has support from people across the country who want to change that, which is why she is staying in politics and in the Liberal party.Trudeau has said he needs more time to think about whether he will move to expel Wilson-Raybould from caucus, or bar her from running for the party.Wilson-Raybould was first elected in Vancouver-Granville in 2015 and has already been nominated to carry the Liberal banner in October’s election.
Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, November 3, 2017 – Nassau – The creation of an Independent Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will be one of the most important advances in the modern Bahamas in combating official corruption as it puts public officials, both elected and non-elected, on “notice” that if they engage in corrupt practices, they will face legal consequences, Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis told Parliament Thursday. The Independent Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is to be staffed by independent professionals.“This is a new day for The Bahamas,” Prime Minister Minnis said. “The creation of this Office is one of the most important advances in the modern Bahamas in combating official corruption which became rampant in our country.“For too long, we have turned a blind eye to official corruption which has drained our country of many hundreds of millions, if not more, of public funds. Official corruption retards and hinders national development and our progress as a country.“The massive corruption of the last five years was a shameful, national disgrace which should never be allowed to happen again in our country. This critical legislation is designed to serve as a deterrent. It is designed to limit and to prosecute such corruption,” Prime Minister Minnis added.Prime Minister Minnis said that, in his welcome remarks at a recent Commonwealth Law Ministers and Senior Officials Meeting held in New Providence, he told delegates that corruption is a crime and a violation of public trust.“Moreover, the net effect of corruption is to siphon off valuable state resources that could be used to assist in development and improve the lives of citizens. I stated that we are amending our Constitution to enshrine the Office of an Independent Director of Public Prosecutions – which was one of the recommendations of our Constitutional Commission and one of the commitments made by this Government.“I also stated that I was proud to announce that one of the pillars of my Administration’s governing mandate was ‘no tolerance’ for official corruption. We are demonstrating that such activities will be vigorously investigated, prosecuted and punished,” Prime Minister Minnis said.By: Matt Maura (BIS) Related Items: Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp

Kharagpur: In a scathing attack on BJP, Trinamool Youth Congress president Abhishek Banerjee said the party cannot win the Lok Sabha elections by conducting riots, playing the communal card or highlighting fake nationalism. He was addressing a mammoth rally here on Tuesday afternoon. “BJP is trying to win the elections by conducting riots or by using fake nationalism. Bengal has a different culture and no one can gain anything here by playing the communal card,” he said. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataBanerjee alleged that the BJP leaders who are coming for election campaigns are all harping on the communal agenda to divide the Hindu and Muslim communities. “BJP sells Hinduism to win elections and with this in mind, spreads hatred against the Muslims. This is most unfortunate. Religion is private and in social life our only philosophy is to serve the people,” he added. Banerjee said the 2019 Lok Sabha election is “not a fight between Trinamool and BJP. It is a fight between Bengal’s rich tradition and culture on one side and the Centre’s extortion on the other.” Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateHe alleged that BJP has looted the country in the past five years. “You will not hear a single word from them on note ban which was implemented to stop black money and terrorism. BJP does not say anything on the hasty implementation of GST either, along with farmer suicides and why 2 crore people lost their jobs. They only talk on religion to incite one community against the other,” the Trinamool Youth Congress president stated. Banerjee urged people to cast their votes in favour of party nominee Manas Bhuniya. “Undivided Midnapore had played a major role in the freedom movement. In 2019, the district will play a major role in driving out the Modi government. On May 23 when the ballot boxes will be opened, people will see that Trinamool Congress has bagged 42 out of 42 seats,” he said. He also urged people to visit the polling stations early and exercise their franchise.
Worried that your son or daughter sleep more even during final exams week? If so, take heart. According to a study, students who sleep for eight hours are more likely to perform better. “Better sleep helped in final exam performance, which is contrary to most college students’ perceptions that they have to sacrifice either studying or sleeping,” said Michael Scullin, Assistant Professor at Baylor University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfFor improvement in academic performance, a student does not have to be an ‘A’ grade, the researchers said. The findings showed that whether a student was an A, B, C, or D student before their final exam, sleeping eight hours was associated with a four-point grade boost. “It is worth noting that one student who had a D-plus grade before the final but slept more than eight hours for a week during finals week remarked that it was the first time her brain worked while taking an exam,” Scullin said. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsivePoor sleep is common during finals as students cut back on sleep, deal with more stress, use more caffeine and are exposed to more bright light, all of which may disrupt sleep. Fewer than 10 per cent of undergraduates maintain the recommended average of 8 hours a night or even the recommended minimum of 7 hours, the researchers said. In the study, the students were given extra points if they met “the 8-hour Challenge” – averaging eight hours of sleep for five nights during final exams week. The participants included undergraduate interior design students and students in upper-level psychology. They wore sleep-monitoring wristbands for five days for accurate results.
