Goldmine Reaches Indie Record Stores in New Distribution Deal

first_img Patrick Prince, Goldmine’s editor, says he’s happy to be working with Nashville-based URP Music Distributors, because they’re a leader in indie distribution. “They’re the perfect match for a publication such as Goldmine — a renowned print magazine that has served music collectors for over forty years,” Prince says. “This is a terrific sampling effort to build circulation,” Chelstowski says. “It’s kind of difficult to say where it will go. There are 1,200 independent record stores across the country and we get into half of them — and independent stores are more difficult to get into than those stores that have scale.” For Ray Chelstowski, senior vice president and general manager of F+W Media’s Small Business Group, which owns the title, this is just the beginning. There’s advertising potential, he tells Folio:, and there is interest from various music suppliers in inserts for in-store copies. And, especially, there’s huge growth potential in the fact that millennials have embraced a new love for vinyl records, which drives traffic to record stories and sales of rare collectables. In the partnership, Goldmine extends its reach into more than 600 independent record stores, about half of the total independent stores in the country. And URP Music gives its customers — music retailers — an added source of value for their customers in the form of access to a highly respected authority on record collecting. “Goldmine is an amazing brand,” Chelstowski says. “It plays a unique, critical role in the recorded music ecosystem, informing and connecting the music buying and collecting community. We have a great partner in URP to get this special issue of Goldmine into more independent stores April 22 for Record Store Day.”center_img Goldmine announced the partnership with URP through promotional materials that were sent to participating Record Store Day stores as part of a “starter kit.” An advertising sales relationship and subscription promotion is also part of the agreement Goldmine, the media brand for music collectors, announced a new nationwide distribution partnership with URP Music Distributors that’s timed to launch on Record Store Day, April 22.   Launched in 1974, Goldmine is the largest marketplace for music collectibles and music memorabilia covering all genres, with an emphasis on the rock and roll era.last_img read more

Account Aggregator to make funding seamless in India

first_imgReserve Bank of IndiaReutersFormer UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani introduced the Account Aggregator to give individuals and small businesses more control over their digital data. Sahamati, a body which will promote the Account Aggregator ecosystem, will be headed by BG Mahesh, one of the earliest internet entrepreneurs in India who also founded OneIndia.com. The account aggregator is based on a new class of non-banking financial institutions called the account aggregator (NBFC-AA) model. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is planning to make bank account operations, including mutual fund, insurance and provident fund businesses, paperless through the account aggregator (AA) app. This will give individuals greater control over how their data is being used, while also reducing the need for them to visit multiple bank branches.Sahamati will work towards accelerating the adoption of the framework by building awareness about the new technology and supporting implementation and integration through various workshops.A new era has begun. Thanks to #AccountAggregator and other digital infrastructure that we have, India will become a leader in empowering individuals and small businesses with their own data! https://t.co/lqkXDN3u44— Nandan Nilekani (@NandanNilekani) July 25, 2019The aggregator will obtain data from multiple service providers and deliver it via consent-based channels to financial information users. This will be used in the financial sector first, followed by telecom, healthcare, and other sectors.”Thanks to AA and other digital infrastructure that we built, India will become a leader in empowering individuals and small businesses with their own data,” said Nilekani. The non-profit will apply for the self-regulatory organisation (SRO) licence with the RBI, which is expected by the year-end, allowing the companies to start offering the services. The license will also give it the status of a self-governing body, allowing it to work on a code of conduct and best practices for member organisations, Mahesh told The Hindu BusinessLine.SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar believes that the use of account aggregators could lead to cost efficiency. This can be shared with the customer in terms of a lower rate of interest. The central bank in 2016 had approved a new class of Non-banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), including four major financial regulators RBI, SEBI, IRDA and PFRDA, to act as Account Aggregators. Their responsibility is to transfer a client’s data without storing it. Acting like consent brokers, the AAs can make money out of this transaction without being able to read the data.last_img read more

Rahul takes charge as Congress president

first_imgNewly-elected president of the Indian National Congress party Rahul Gandhi (L) kisses his mother and former party president Sonia Gandhi during a ceremony at the party headquarters in New Delhi on 16 December, 2017. Photo: AFPIn a generational shift that ended the Sonia Gandhi era in India’s political party Congress, her son Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took over as the new party president and launched a sharp attack on Indian prime minister Narendra Modi accusing him of taking the country “backwards to a medieval past” where people are butchered because of what they eat and believe in.The handing over of the mantle of the leadership of the 132-year-old party took place at a ceremony on the lawns of the Congress headquarters where Central Election Authority president Mullapally Ramachandran presented the Certificate of Election to Rahul Gandhi in a ceremony watched by Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other top leaders of the party. In his first speech as the Congress president, Rahul Gandhi launched an all-out attack against Modi and the BJP.”The Congress took India into the 21st century while prime minister (Modi) is taking us backwards to a medieval past where people are butchered because of who they are, beaten for what they believe and killed for what they eat.”This ugly violence shames us in the world. Our country, whose philosophy and history is born out of love and compassion, is tarnished by such horror and no amount of hugs can repair the damage done to this great country of ours.”He said the country was now being compelled to imagines that businesses can be built without harmony and “that only one man, one man himself – is the voice of reason, that expertise, experience and knowledge can be cast aside for personal glory, that it is acceptable for our foreign policy to lie in tatters so that one man can feel strong, and that everything in fact is subservient to the leader’s personal image”.He said many of the countrymen were “disillusioned by the politics of our time” as “today, politics is devoid of kindness and truth”.”Today, the BJP is trying to spread fire and violence in the entire country and only one power can stop this. That is the Congress worker and leader. They break and we bind. They set fire and we douse it. They create anger and we create love. This is the difference between them and us. And I want to assure you that Congress workers and leaders, that you all are my family, whether you are a youth or an elder, wherever you come from, you all are mine, and I will give you all my love.”The newly-elected party president Rahul Gandhi (R) receives the certificate of election as Congress president from the Congress Central Election Authority president Mullapally Ramchandran during a ceremony at the party headquarters in New Delhi on 16 December, 2017. Photo: AFPIn an apparent reference to Modi’s “Congress-free India”, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress considers the BJP its brothers and sisters even though it doesn’t agree with them.”They want an India free of Congress, they want to erase us but the Congress’ inclusion and respect for all Indians extends even to the BJP. We do not fight hate with hate. The Congress has met and will always meet our challenges and struggles with love and affection. They crush voice, we allow the most vulnerable to sing. They defame, we respect and defend.”They might control the structures of power, the machinery of silence and fear but, we in the Congress, we are the bastion of the people. It is in this service that my idealism, your idealism and our hope for politics always rests.”The Gandhi scion’s formal takeover comes two days before the counting of votes for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections, the outcome of which could be a trendsetter for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. His main challenge remains the revamping of party organisation, apart from electoral battles in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.Sonia Gandhi, 71, who helmed the party for 19 years, in her last address as the party President, said the Congress has been playing the role of opposition since 2014 and never before has it faced the challenge that it faces today.”The fundamentals of our Constitution are under attack, our party has lost several state elections. But an exemplary energy fires our Congress workers. We are not the ones to bend in fear, because our struggle is a fight for the very soul of this nation. We will never retreat from this fight.”Referring to the time she took over as Congress President in 1998, she said the party had only three governments and was far from a government at the Centre.”Meeting this challenge was not a marvel achieved by any one individual… India is a young country. I am confident that with a new and young leadership our party will be reinvigorated and bring about the changes we need.”Talking about Rahul Gandhi and challenges he faces after his elevation, Sonia Gandhi said it would not be suitable for her to praise him because he is her son.”But this much I will say — while from his very childhood he has borne the very experience of violence, the savage personal attacks he has confronted since entering politics have served to make him a brave and strong-hearted man.”I am proud of his endurance and firmness. And I am confident he will lead the party with a pure heart, patience and devotion.”Manmohan Singh said Rahul Gandhi was assuming the new responsibility amid “disturbing trends”.”As a distinguished academic pointed out a few days ago that there are dangers that the politics of fear will take over the politics of hope. Rahulji, we depend upon you to ensure that the politics of fear does not prevail over the politics of hope which this country needs.”He brings to this Office of the Congress President a new sense of dedication, a new sense of commitment, a new sense of looking after the leadership role with courage and humility.”Outside the 24, Akbar Road, Congress headquarters, a group of colourfully dressed artistes played drums and danced to Punjabi bhangra tunes with party supporters, including men and women, also shaking a leg or two and waving Rahul Gandhi’s pictures and Congress flags. There were other groups of artists from Hyderabad and Rajasthan performing folk dances of their regions.last_img read more

Greg Abbott is set to meet with President Donald Trump on Friday at the White House. The meeting, scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern Time in the Oval Office, will include Charter Communications CEO Thomas Rutledge, according to the White House. The topic of the meeting was not immediately clear, but it comes as the cable company moves forward with plans to open its first Spanish-language call center in McAllen. Early Oculus Quest Data Suggests Solid Sales But No Blockbuster Numbers

first_imgA Facebook spokesperson didn’t directly respond to those estimates, but sent Variety the following statement: “Early momentum on Quest is very promising, but we still have a lot of work to do as a company / industry to make VR mainstream and a self-sustaining industry.”Other publicly available data points suggest that this estimate could be roughly accurate. The Oculus mobile app, which is necessary to activate a newly-bought Quest, has seen a significant growth in downloads, with app analytics specialist Sensor Tower estimating that the app has been downloaded by about 115K new users across iOS and Android in the 21 days following the Quest’s launch. “That’s about 47K more installs than the 68K it saw during the 21 days leading up to the launch,” said Sensor Tower head of mobile insights Randy Nelson. Downloads of the app, which can also be used to manage other Oculus headsets, had been fairly stable ever since the end of the holiday season. (It’s worth noting that users of other Oculus headsets may have bought the Quest as well, which wouldn’t have resulted in a new app download.)“Based on the daily average that were potentially sold and the number of days remaining in 2019, I’d say given a strong marketing push during the holidays they could definitely exceed the one million sales mark for the year I’ve seen projected,” Nelson said. “It’ll just take some work.”One major factor that could have a significant impact on sales is the availability of the Quest. The headset quickly sold out across a number of major retailers following its launch. Availability remains spotty, with Amazon estimating delivery times of up to 2 months for the 128 GB version of the headset at the time of writing, and Best Buy listing the 64GB version as sold out.“We’re so glad to see the excitement and interest in Oculus Quest,” a Facebook spokesperson told Variety at the end of May. “While some of our retail partners are temporarily out of stock online, we’re working to restore availability in all channels as soon as possible.”Update: This post was updated with a statement from a Facebook spokesperson. Still, some estimate that Facebook could sell more than 1 million units in 2019.Facebook has yet to release any official sales numbers for the Quest, which was officially released last month. The company did drop one data point this week to show that the Quest is on the right track, with Facebook vice president Andrew Bosworth telling the audience of the Code conference that the company had sold $5 million in content in the first 2 weeks following the Quest’s debut. This revelation prompted AR and VR consultant Nima Zeighami to do some quick back-of-the-envelope math, with Zeighami estimating that Facebook may have sold fewer than 100,000 Quests in the first 2 weeks. Zeighami based his math on the assumption that each Quest owner may have bought 2 titles, spending about $50 on average.
